In Loving Memory of Dr. Sue Johnson

The Innovator of Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy

On April 23rd, 2024, Dr. Sue Johnson died after a long battle with cancer. As relationship focused therapists, Dr. Johnson made an immeasurable mark on all of us at A Better Life. Dr Johnson was the innovator of Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT). Dr. Johnson

You can read her full obituary and watch a video dedicated to Dr. Johnson here.

Her book, Hold Me Tight, Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love has changed relationships for the better by helping couples to get to the core of their conflicts - emotional and attachment wounds - so they can repair and connect more deeply. If you haven't read her book yet, we highly suggest it.

In memory of Dr. Sue, I encourage you to consider her three core criteria for creating a secure attachment with your partner - you can remember it with the phrase "ARE you there?"

A = Accessible - Be accessible to your partner today. Not just with your time, but with your emotions. Try to read your partner's emotional state by actually looking up from your phone, the dishes, and whatever else is distracting you and noticing their face. If your loved one asks how you are instead of saying "I am fine" try to share more.

R - Responsive - Turn towards your partner's attempts to connect by responding. Instead of being dismissive or critical, try to be present.

E - Engaged - Today, take the time to be really engaged with your partner. Notice them...check in on them...be curious about them.

By doing these things you'll be honoring your relationship and the life of Dr. Johnson.
